Develop your expertise and advance your career

Your hard work and passion for law has brought you here. We believe articling should deliver the real experiences and skills that set the foundation for a fulfilling and impactful legal career — guided by your unique goals and interests.

Articling at Kornfeld

Real experience, tailored to your interests

You’ll be a contributing member of the team from day one—joining client meetings, attending court proceedings, working on cases, sharing your ideas and actively participating in Kornfeld life. While we encourage students to gain experience working across all of our practice areas, we collaborate to identify the areas that best reflect your interests and goals and to empower you to evolve and adjust throughout your articles.

Mentorship from top legal minds

You’ll have unrivalled access to our seasoned lawyers and staff, without the bureaucracy of a large firm. Our lawyers are creative and compassionate experts in their field, known for solving complex challenges with innovative legal strategies. Students work one-on-one with mentors in each practice area, and benefit from regular feedback and support from lawyers across the firm.

Collaborative and friendly environment

While our work includes a range of challenging and high-profile cases for major business and real estate clients, you’ll find a culture of care and collaboration only possible in a boutique office atmosphere. We foster a supportive culture that empowers professional growth, champions work-life balance and giving back to our community. In your time here, you’ll build relationships with mentors and peers that may last a lifetime.

What our students have to say

My articling experience at Kornfeld was incredibly enriching and formative, thanks to the firm’s exceptional balance of autonomy, mentorship, and substantive legal exposure. Kornfeld afforded me the opportunity not only to refine and expand my existing legal interests but also challenged me to explore complex practice areas beyond those I encountered in law school. As a mid-size firm, I was able to build meaningful professional relationships with a diverse group of practitioners. I had the chance to collaborate closely with accomplished lawyers at all levels of seniority, benefiting immensely from their supportive mentorship and the extensive range of legal matters to which I was exposed.

Articling Program

At our firm, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of lawyers. Much like our summer student program, we aim to hire articling students who will grow with us and, ultimately, become associates and partners in the firm.

About the Program

Our articling program offers a structured rotation, half of which is spent in our Litigation Group and the other half in our Real Estate and Corporate/Commercial Groups. These two rotations will provide you with experience in a broad range of practice areas, helping you build a well-rounded skill set. Along the way, you’ll receive hands-on mentorship, practical experience, and the support of a collaborative team – all designed to help you develop the skills and confidence you need to thrive in your legal career.

Summer Program

Our summer student program is designed for second-year law students looking to gain practical experience in all aspects of business law.

About the Program

Given the shortened summer articling term, there is no formal rotation structure in our summer program. Our summer students have the freedom to explore different practice areas and take on a variety of tasks, including conducting legal research, preparing legal memoranda,  attending client meetings, and accompanying lawyers to court. We encourage students to take initiative, seek out work that aligns with their interest, and actively contribute to the team. This approach gives you the flexibility to shape your experience and focus on areas that are most meaningful to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our goal is to expose our students to a broad range of practice areas, giving them the opportunity to work on all aspects of a file from beginning to end. We are a firm where diversity is personified. We help our students grow into becoming well-rounded lawyers by working closely with them and providing guidance and support. At the same time, we encourage students to explore the practice areas that they are interested in and aim to foster their interests through discussion and collaboration.

We are looking for well-rounded students who possess excellent academic qualifications and strong writing and analytical skills. We also seek enthusiastic and motivated candidates who perform well both independently and in a team setting.

We follow the Vancouver Bar Association’s interview guidelines concerning procedures and timelines for applications. Generally, the deadline for summer articling applications is late August of each year

We typically hire 2 summer students per year, with the aim of having these students return to complete their articles with the firm after their third-year of law school.

Summer students and articled students will work on everything that we do and will have the opportunity to develop their research, advocacy, and drafting skills. Our students gain valuable experience by drafting legal opinions, agreements, pleadings, and memoranda and conducting research.  Students will be able to accompany lawyers for client meetings, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, examinations for discovery and trials.

We have a supportive, close-knit and collegial environment. We value diverse perspectives, insights and ideas that make for a successful and creative workplace. We are proud of our culture of care and collaboration that is only possible in a boutique office atmosphere.

Salaries are reviewed annually and are competitive with other large law firms in downtown Vancouver. Articling students are entitled to a comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental and extended health, and short-term and long-term disability benefits, as well as a wide range of legal memberships. In addition, articling students receive payment of PLTC course fees and salary during PLTC.

Throughout the year, our firm holds a number of social activities both inside and outside the office. Beyond annual summar and winter parties, we organize monthly birthday lunches and themed get-togethers. Some examples of activities we have enjoyed in the community include a boxing class, puppy yoga and an annual pitch and putt tournament in Stanley Park where firm members challenge for the two winner’s blazers.
